Donald Irwin Allan

PORTAGE/TWP OF CALEDONIA – Donald Irwin Allan, age 92, of the Township of Caledonia, died peacefully on Sunday, February 16, 2014, at home.

Don was born August 21, 1921 the son of Irwin and Bernice (Jevens) Allan.  He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage.  Don graduated from Portage High School in 1939.  He served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant in the South Pacific from December 1942 to January 1946.  After returning from the service Don worked for the fire department at Badger Ordnance until he took over the family dairy farm.  While farming he also drove school bus for the Caledonia Grade School for many years.  He and Doris also opened their farm “Uncle Don’s Farm” to families from the city as a farm vacation for many years.   After retiring from farming he worked at Petro for several years.

Survivors include his son, Jim (Caryl) Allan of Centralia, MO; his daughter, Bobbi (Kurt) Dickinson, of Albany; four grandchildren, Chad Dickinson, Jami (Chris) Harvey, Jennifer Allan and Jason Prescher; two sisters, Lucille Jacobson and Joanne (Paul) Smith, other relatives and many friends.  Don was preceded in death by his wife Doris and his parents.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating.  Military Honors will be presented by Portage area veterans.  Inurnment will be private.  Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg or your local humane society.
