Phyllis Ann (Bublitz) Byers

PORTAGE  --  Phyllis Ann (Bublitz) Byers, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at Divine Savior Healthcare Hospital in Portage. 

Phyllis was born on July 26, 1934 to Franklin “Mike” and Mabel (Kluth) Bublitz in Portage, where she grew up on “Bone Hill”.  She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Methodist Church, where in earlier years she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.  In high school she worked after school and weekends at the Portage Hosier, making “mukluks”, as well as babysitting.  After graduating from Portage High School in 1952, she attended Harper Method Cosmetology School in Madison, graduating in 1953.  During college she worked at Rennebohm’s on State Street in Madison at the soda fountain and as a clerk. She then returned to Portage to work at Myrons Beauty Salon until 1960 when her son, Mike was born. 

Phyllis met her husband, Merl as a freshman in high school and they married on June 13, 1953.  They had 51 ½ years together. Together they enjoyed sports, especially the Badgers, Packers and Portage Warriors, and their years at the trailer until Merl’s illness.  Most of all they treasured their time with Mike, Barb and the girls, watching the girls through all of their activities over the years as well as following the nieces and nephews plus great nieces and nephews. Phyllis belonged to the Railroad Lodges and American Legion Auxiliary.  She enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, going to Ho Chunk, spending time with her friends, and her job of bailiff for Columbia County before retiring in 1995.

She is survived by her son, Mike, his caring wife, Barb, and her lovable granddaughters, Brianna and Michaela, all of Inver Grove Heights, MN; her sister-in-law, Delores Bublitz, of Portage; an aunt, Delores Kluth, of Portage, nieces, nephews, cousins, special great-nieces and nephews, other extended family and so many good friends.  Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Merl, her parents, her brothers, Bob, and Ken, her sister and brother-in-law, Sandy  and Herman “Babe” Manthey, her great-niece, Mandi Jo Bublitz, her in-laws, Elmer and Beulah Byers, her sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, Marcella and David Gray, Marie and Marv Ellis, and her nephew, Todd (Geri) Gray.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Portage United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lee Bushweiler officiating.  Burial will be held on Saturday in Lakeview Cemetery, Jackson Township, Adams County.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2013 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.         

Dance like no one is watching, sing like no one is listening, smile, laugh and love each and every one of your family and friends “LIKE I HAVE LOVED YOU ALL”
