Shirley V. Herpel

PORTAGE  --  Shirley V. Herpel, age 82, of Portage, died at home on Saturday, May 31, 2014. 

Shirley was born on July 1, 1931 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Amos and Virginia (Roberts) Wrightsman.  She married LaMonte “Bud” Herpel on April 14, 1951.  Shirley worked for many years at Divine Savior Hospital in the OB and Surgery Departments.  Shirley was a voracious reader of adventure & mystery novels.  Shirley loved to play scrabble, solve crossword puzzles and play cards with her family.  Shirley was an avid gardener who surrounded her house with a large variety of plants and flowers.  Shirley also enjoyed traveling, whether it was seeing the country in a RV with her husband, oversea trips with her mother or just to visit her children and grandchildren.  Through-out her life, Shirley always had an extended family that included horses, dogs and cats of any shape, size or breed.  Shirley was passionate about women’s rights issues and was always willing to debate the subject.  Shirley championed and gave generously to children’s charities, public television, humane society, and the Portage Public Library.

Shirley is survived by her sons, David (Evi) Herpel of Portage, and Mike (Darcy Miller) of Pullman, WA; daughter Jill (Mark) Sebek of Watertown; grandchildren, Jackie (Bob) Roppel, Scott and Paul Herpel, Levi Miller Herpel, step brother, John Murray, step sister, Gerry Markwardt, other relatives and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, step father, Fran Murray, brother Bruce Wrightsman, sister-in-law Edith Wrightsman, father and mother-in-law Harley and Wanda Herpel, sisters-in-law Donna Foley and Barbara (Roger) Herpel and brother-in-law Tom Foley.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the VFW hall in Portage on Tuesday, July 8th from 4 pm to 8 pm.  Family inurnment will be held on July 9 at Silver Lake Cemetery with Dave Wrightsman officiating.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Jude’s Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care for all their special care and support of Shirley and her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Shirley’s name to the Portage Public Library, 253 West Edgewater St., Portage.
