Eleanor Ann Humphrey

PORTAGE – Eleanor “Elinor” Ann Humphrey passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Tivoli Assisted Living Home.

Eleanor was born on September 21, 1922, to John and Anena (Soisson) Carroll.  She was the eldest of three children.  Eleanor graduated from St. Mary School and Portage High School before attending Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. 

She married Curt Humphrey and they were married for 66 years.  Eleanor was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage and in Pardeeville.  She was a member of the Portage Curling Club, the Portage Country Club, the GG’s (Golden Gossip), Women’s Civic League, and the Zona Gale Center.  Throughout her life, she retained close friendships in the community and loved playing bridge.  Eleanor was a volunteer with Divine Savior Healthcare and at St. Mary School.  She enjoyed reading and traveling.

Eleanor is survived by her children, Nene Humphrey, Brooklyn, NY, Susan (Hugh) Lena, Smithfield, RI, and James Humphrey, Portage;  her grandchildren, Jennifer Lena, New York City and Whitney (Gubio) Henrique, Florida;  her great-grandchild, Kaila;  other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Marion Bohn, her brother, James Carroll, and her son-in-law, Benny Andrews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 22, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 307 W. Cook St., Portage.  Inurnment will be private.  Visitation will be held on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., at the church.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Tivoli for the high level of care during Eleanor’s last years.           

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portage Library or Portage Center for the Arts.

The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
