Doris B. Manke
(January 18, 1918 - March 26, 2014)


PORTAGE, WI / CHARLESTON, IL – Doris Mary (Buzzell) Buckley Manke, age 96 of Charleston and formerly of Poynette, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 while at her Heartland Christian Village Home.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 and from 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Poynette.  The Funeral Service honoring and celebrating her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Strickert officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hillside Cemetery located in Poynette.  It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Poynette or the Muscular Dystrophy Association. 

Doris was born on January 18, 1918 near Poynette, the daughter of the late James Riley and Lucy M. (Kearney) Buzzell.  She married Harold Buckley on November 29, 1939 and they celebrated 44 years of marriage prior to his death on September 26, 1984.  She later married Herb Manke on November 28, 1987 and he preceded her in death on November 30, 1996.  She is survived by a loving and devoted daughter, Bonnie Buckley of Charleston; three grandchildren, Shannon Buckley-Shaklee of Seoul, South Korea, Ryan Buckley-Shaklee and wife Megan Shaklee of Homewood, Illinois and Amber Buckley-Shaklee of Urbana, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Bella and Emi Shaklee both of Homewood; five stepchildren, Marie Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska, Marvin Manke and wife Helen of Poynette, Margie Radman of Portage, Wisconsin, Carol DeBriend and husband Richard of Mondovi, Wisconsin, Russell Manke and wife Vickie of Janesville, Wisconsin; 14 step-grandchildren; 12 step-greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and both husbands, Doris was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Mark Shaklee; two step-sons-in-law, Del Anderson and Ronald Radman; and two brothers, Lester and Lynn Buzzell. 

Doris was a 1935 graduate of Portage High School.  She was employed at the Portage Shoe Factory and later accepted a position with the Postal Service and managed the Post Office in Arlington, Wisconsin during World War II.  She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Poynette for numerous years, was active in its Women’s Club, and utilized her beautiful and meticulous seamstress skills in making all the Chrismons for the church Christmas tree.  

Doris always enjoyed being in the company of others and was a member of several social clubs and organizations which included the Poynette Women’s Club, the Poynette Curling Club, several card clubs and a bowling league.  She possessed a kind and generous spirit and volunteered more than 25 years with the Sr. Nutrition Center and also with the Commodities Give-Away program.  She had a love for her community and served on the committee to plan the construction of the Poynette Jr. High School.  

Doris enhanced the lives of her family and friends through her loving and caring attitude and kind and gentle spirit.  They will forever cherish their many fond memories of this special lady.
