Violet G. Daugherty

PORTAGE – Violet Gwendolyn Daugherty was a smart and spirited woman from start to finish. Born to Edna and Herman Martin January 30, 1927, she lived her early life in her hometown of Boscobel, Wisconsin – the same town where she met the enduring love of her life. Violet started dating her future husband, Clinton Daugherty, while they were both still in high school, and Clint transferred schools simply to be closer to her. Despite their deep commitment, the young couple had lives to live, and Violet began attending the Cook County School of Nursing in Chicago so she could share her deep affection for people within the medical community. Eventually, her connection to Clint was too strong to resist, and when they married on October 25, 1947, Violet turned her innate sense of care and compassion to her husband and, one by one, to her seven children.

The Daugherty household was a joyful hub of tumbling kids. Then teens. Then adults. A place of card games and sports; conversation and laughter that lasted well into the wee hours. A tight-knit family that clearly reveled in their time together, and Violet beamed above it all with an infectious laugh, and genuine love and pride for her bustling clan.

To her loving friends and family, Violet felt like home. From her high school friends, to the ladies in card club, to the Wauona Trail Women’s Club, with whom she was lunching when she was taken to the hospital on Monday, October 15, 2018. There, she charmed her doctors, and passed away with the down-to-earth dignity and grace that defined her life.

Though our loss is great, our hearts are full. And our memories are infinite.

Violet is survived by her son Kirk Daugherty (Mary); daughter Jill Daugherty-Kelly (KC); son Robin Daugherty (Leslie); son Scott Daugherty (Maureen); brother-in-law, Richard Daugherty (Laura); seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and many beloved friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents Edna and Herman Martin; husband Clinton Daugherty; daughter Kristin Wright (Robert and Sandy Wright); daughter Susan Amend (Thomas Amend and Barb Chappell), son Shane Daugherty (Laurie and Kevin Stautz); brother Stan Martin and his wife, Rita; and brother and sister-in-law Robert and Nette Daugherty.

Visitation will be held at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home (www.pmmfh.com), 430 West Wisconsin Street, Portage, Wisconsin on Monday, October 22, 2018, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 pm, with Chaplain Tom Drury officiating. A casual celebration of life will be held after the service at the Corner Pocket in Portage, WI from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. There will be a private inurnment in Boscobel at a later date.
