Shirley D. Gay

BRIGGSVILLE/PORTAGE  -- Shirley D. Gay, age 94, of Portage, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at Tivoli in Portage.

Shirley was born on August 1, 1923 in Dane County, Township of Windsor, the daughter of Stanley and Carrie (Vincent) Hanson.  She married James “Toad” Gay on January 1, 1949 at the Briggsville United Methodist Church in Briggsville.  Toad preceded her in death in 1985.  Shirley was employed by Weyenberg Shoe Factory in Portage.  She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Briggsville for over 50 years.    

She is survived by her sister, Wanda Kaufman, of Sturtevant; a special friend, Troy Cleary, of Briggsville; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Toad, three brothers, Gayle, Glen and Vern Hanson, four sisters, Jacqueline Brue, Joyce Phillips, Helen Oliver and Ruby Markofski, a special friend, Robert Kettleson as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.   

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage (www.pmmfh.com). Burial will follow at Briggsville Protestant Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Briggsville, or Agrace HospiceCare.                        .
