Judith Cooney

 

PORTAGE  -- Judith Cooney, age 85, of Portage, died on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Hospice Care, Inc. in Madison.

Judy was born in Appleton, on February 16, 1924, the daughter of Robert and Pauline (Cole) Amundson.  She married Dr. Robert Cooney on August 20, 1950 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, in Madison.  Judy’s passions included sewing, art, gourmet cooking, gardening, reading, and traveling in Europe, especially to Vienna, Copenhagen, and Scandinavia. In her later years she enjoyed family trips to the ocean.  She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, and loved cross country skiing.  She also loved to attend events at the Memorial Union Theater.  Judy was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and the Women’s Civic League. 

Judy is survived by her sons, Robert J. (Janice) Cooney, Verona, Thomas W. Cooney, Madison, and Philip M. (Tracye) of Wilmington, N.C.; her grandchildren, Robert John Cooney, Jr., and Katherine Selena Cooney; her best friend, Pat Atkinson, Portage, other relatives and dear friends.  Judith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dr. Robert Cooney, and her sister, Karen “Ki” Taylor.   

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage, with Fr. Jim Murphy presiding.  Private inurnment will be held at Silver Lake Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church.
