Eugene L. McFarlane

PORTAGE  -- Eugene L. McFarlane, age 76, of Portage, passed away on Sunday, November 8,2009 at his home, surrounded by his family, after three courageous battles of cancer.

He was born on December 2, 1932 in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, the son of Leslie and Beulah (Owens) McFarlane, and grew up in the North Leeds area.  He served in the U.S. Army from May 14, 1953 to January 18, 1955, and retired from Del Monte, Arlington, WI after 30 years.  Eugene married Marilyn McQueen on February 10, 1961 in Dubuque, Iowa and then moved to Portage.  Eugene’s passions were hunting, fishing, gardening and hickory nut and berry picking. 

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Marilyn;  son, Richard (Sheila) McFarlane, and daughter, Shelly (Thom) Wielgus, all of Portage;  grandchildren, Tara (Josh Glendenning) Wielgus, Arizona, Theran Wielgus, Caley and Courtney McFarlane;  sisters and brothers, Shirley Falk, Lodi, Mary (Del) Keilman, Earlville, IL, Larry (Chris) McFarlane, Portage, and Pamela (Rodney) Stibb, Lodi;  nieces, nephews, other near relatives and many close friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Robert Falk.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2009 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with the Rev. Alan Boeck and the Rev. Delmer Keilman co-officiating.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, North Leeds, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, with military honors provided by Portage area veterans.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Friday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Memorials may be given to Home Health United Hospice or St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage.
