Lyman D. Newell

PORTAGE  -- Lyman D. Newell, age 91, of Portage, died on Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Heritage House in Portage.

Lyman was born on March 11, 1918 in Benton Twp., Lake County, Illinois, the son of Frank and Margaret (McGuire) Newell.  He graduated from Ingram Union Free High School, Wisconsin on May 22, 1935.  On June 19, 1941, Lyman was united in marriage with Inez Fonk, and together they raised their family in Illinois.  Following the sale of their family grocery business in Libertyville, Illinois, they moved to their home on Swan Lake, where they enjoyed many years of retirement.  Lyman was an avid golfer, enjoyed many years as a volunteer for A.R.C. of Columbia County, and also as an AARP Volunteer Tax Aide. 

He is survived by four children, Linda (Michael) Goheen, Aiken, SC, Milton Newell, Sr., Florida, Raymond (Marsha) Newell, Wheaton, IL, and Teresa (Jim) Miller, Portage;   twelve grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) McCarthy, Charlotte, NC, Martin (Dana) Goheen, Glen Elyn, IL, David Goheen, Lombard, IL, Kevin Goheen, Charlotte, NC, Milton Newell, Jr., Pardeeville, Laura (Chris) Newell-Herrington, rural Pardeeville, Katherine Newell, Warrenville, IL, Andrea Newell, Aurora, IL, Matthew (Margarita) Newell, North Aurora, IL, Brian (Janelle) Donohue, Endeavor, WI, Brenda (Guy) Austin, Hollandale, WI, and Diane (Kory) Kalscheur, Pine Bluff, WI;  22 great grandchildren;  5 great-great-grandchildren;  his sister, Gertrude “Trude” Doughten, Florida;  other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Inez on June 6, 2000, and his sisters, Frances Newell, Doris Kennedy Hanks, Marion Wetzel, Margaret O’Connor, and Una Newell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kenosha.  Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kenosha.

The family requests that flowers not be sent.  Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
