Martin S. Olson

PORTAGE  --  Martin S. Olson, age 59, of Portage, died of pulmonary fibrosis on Friday, May 1, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Portage United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Countryman officiating.  Inurnment will be private.  Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.

Marty was born on August 11, 1949 in Veblen, South Dakota, the son of Kenneth and Irene (Larson) Olson.  He was married on June 12, 1971 to Debra Medsker in Maryville, Missouri.  Marty worked for Wisconsin Power & Light / Alliant Energy for 28 years, where he was a member of the company’s HAZMAT Team and Fire Brigade.  He was a member of Portage United Methodist Church and Electrical Workers Union #965.  Marty was a huge Minnesota Vikings fan.  He loved woodworking, traveling, and spending time and sharing his special love with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Debby;  his mother, Irene Olson, Springfield, MN;  three children, Nathan (Tasha) Olson, Madison, Holly (Aaron) Atkinson, Portage, and Heidi Olson, Portage; his grandchildren, Melinda Atkinson, Stewart Atkinson, Ruby Atkinson, and Cooper Atkinson;  five brothers, Larry (Carol) Olson, Sioux Falls, SD, Kieth (Marj) Olson, Worthington, MN, Darwin Olson, Brainerd, MN, Kim (Rhonda) Olson, New Ulm, MN, and Todd (Chris) Olson, New Ulm, MN;  his father-in-law, Conner Medsker;  his sister-in-law, Dawn Medsker;  15 nieces, one nephew, many other near relatives, dear friends, and co-workers.  He was preceded in death by his father.
