Clifford W. Kleist

PORTAGE   –  Clifford W. Kleist, age 88, of Portage, passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena.

Clifford was born on November 4, 1922 in Portage, WI, to Edward and Edith (Grunke) Kleist.  He proudly served his country in the Army in World War II.  Clifford married Anita Kluge on November 8, 1946.  He worked at various jobs in Portage during his lifetime.  The majority of his working years were at St. John’s School and Church, and Portage schools.  Clifford was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage and the VFW in Portage.

Clifford is survived by a son, Robert (Kathy) Kleist, Portage;  three step-sons, Lawrence, Lyle and Alan Kluge, all of Portage;  grandchildren;  great-grandchildren;  friends;  nieces and nephews.  Clifford was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather.  He will be greatly missed.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita, of 53 years, in 1999.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law, George and Tillie (Hohlstein) Kluge, Sr., a brother, Clarence Kleist, his sisters-in-law, Erma Kleist, Kay Kluge, Helen Schehr, and Elnora Koss, his brothers-in-law,  George Kluge, Jr., Charles, Leonard and Robert Kluge, and a grandson, Dan Kluge.

At Clifford’s request, there will be no services.

Clifford’s family wishes to thank everyone at Columbia Health Care in Wyocena for their wonderful care and friendship to Clifford.

A memorial has been established in Clifford’s name.

The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
