Marion Josephine (Honey) Szwedo

PORTAGE – Marion Josephine (Honey) Szwedo, age 88, of Portage was called home to the Lord on Friday, January 14, 2011, at the Columbia Healthcare Center in Wyocena.

Marion was born to Karol and Anna Majchrowicz on July 2, 1922 in Chicago, Il. Marion’s nickname was “Honey” her entire life as she was the youngest of six sisters and one brother.  Marion and Steven S. (Lefty) Szwedo were married on August 22, 1942 in Chicago, Il.  They enjoyed 65 years of marriage and almost 30 years of retirement together. Marion worked for Montgomery Wards for 30 years and enjoyed her leisure time with Steve traveling, dancing, bowling visiting with friends and family and gardening.  Marion loved to dance, sing, do crafts, play cards and most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Marion was devoted to her husband, Steve, and her family.  Marion and Steve moved from Chicago to Portage in1983 and loved small town living.  Marion and Steve resided at the Columbia Healthcare Center in Wyocena since 2006.  They shared the “honeymoon suite” until Steve’s passing on July 2, 2008.  Marion loved her “girls” at Wyocena and enjoyed getting her hair done and having manicures.

Although Alzheimer’s disease robbed Marion of many memories, she would still sing along when there was a music program at the Center and she remembered the words to the songs from over 50 years ago.  Marion was the last surviving member of her family as well as of her husband’s family.  Theirs was a generation of much love and fun times with family and friends.  Marion’s “loud” singing and silly dancing always made family get-togethers and holidays fun times which are now treasured memories.  She will be deeply missed by her family.

Marion is survived by her daughter, Judith Cichon (the late Ronald) of Portage; grandchildren, Christopher (Heather) Cichon of Eau Claire, Scott Cichon (Carol Flowers) of Mauston, Annemarie Weaver (Eric Weidling) of Portage.  She is also survived by her dearest great-grandchildren, Jessica Weaver, Abigail Weidling, Blake Flowers, Hope and Owen Cichon.  Marion had a special place in her heart for niece Nancy Chapman and nephew Ronald (Mary) Kamin.

Marion was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Steven S. Szwedo; her son-in-law, Ronald Cichon; her grandson-in-law, David Weaver.  She was also preceded in death by brother Chester Majchrowicz; sisters, Stella Majchrowicz, Josephine (the late Stanley) Skoczek, Rose (the late Andrew) Stachon, Sophie (the late Joseph) Dembinski, and Marceline (the late Earl) Kamin; brothers-in-law, Joseph (the late Pauline) Szwedo, Walther (the late Helen) Szwedo, Edward (the late Stella) Szwedo, John (the late Mary) Szwedo; sister-in-law, Victoria (the late Otto) Vidlak and Tessa.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with Fr. Jim Murphy presiding.  Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Portage.  Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
