John “Sam” Jay

RIO – John “Sam” Jay, age 52, of Rio, died on Monday, August 8, 2011 at Divine Savior Healthcare in Portage.

John was born on January 14, 1959 the son of John C. and Virginia (Shaw) Jay. He married Theresa Scott on December 31, 2007. John was a jet fighter mechanic for the National Guard in Madison for over 30 years. His hobbies included camping, fishing, golfing, motor cycle riding and classic cars. He was an active member of the Brandt-Pache Post #10266 Poynette, the Clyde Sheppard American Legion Post #271Poynette, where he had been Commander of both Posts.  He was also a member of the Poynette Curling Club, Poynette Village Board, Ducks Unlimited and the Safari Club.  John was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pardeeville and was on the Church Council at Zion Lutheran Church in Leeds.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Jay of Rio; children, John W. Jay, Poynette, Sarah Long, Portage and Danielle (Nick) Sarver, Portage; grandchildren, Autumn and Hunter Sarver; brother, Dan Jay, Mauston; in-laws, Marelene (Marlyn) Scott, Rio and Larry Hubred, Poynette; sister/aunt, Betty Granger, Lyndon Station; former wife, Jane Jay, Poynette; former in-laws, Pete and Leone Ohnesorge, Poynette; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends.  John was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Crystal Jay.
    
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, August 19, 2011, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pardeeville, with Rev. William Runke officiating.  Military Honors will be provided by the Poynette area veterans. Inurnment will be private at a later date.   Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Poynette and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
