Allen H. Mayo

PORTAGE—Allen H. Mayo, age 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at his home in Portage after a long illness.

Allen was born on July 8, 1940 in Beverly, West Virginia, the son of Clee and Edith (Hornbeck) Mayo.  His life’s work was in the foundry and plastics industries managing foundries in West Virginia, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  He retired as a sales and technical consultant from Tooling Technology, Fort Laramie, Ohio in 2000.  Allen was an avid reader with a passion for history, especially the Civil War.  He also enjoyed woodworking and made many pieces of furniture for family and friends.  His best times were visiting with family and friends, especially his friends from Elkins, West Virginia, Class of 1958.  

Allen is survived by his wife, Cathy, of Portage; his son, Allen “Monty” Mayo, of Louisville, KY; his daughter, Cathy “Punk” White, Winchester, VA; and a granddaughter, Madelynne White, of Winchester, VA.  He is further survived by three step-daughters, Staci (Steve) Quirk, of Hackettstown, NJ, Jodi
Quirk, of San Diego, CA, and Amy (Tim) Fisher, of Portage; five step-grandchildren, Sutton, Lily, Carlie, Austin and Brayden;  his brother, George (Mary Jo) Mayo, Elkins, WV; a special cousin, Doris Hamman, of Buckhannon, WV, other relatives and many friends. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved dog, “Stumpy”.

Visitation will held at Tomlyn Funeral Home, 45 Randolph Ave, Elkins, WV, on Saturday, August 25, 2012, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m.  Burial will follow at the Beverly Cemetery, in Beverly WV.

Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank Dr. Escobedo and the staff of SMDV/Portage Clinic for all their loving care and support throughout Al’s illness, and Home Health Hospice for their support the past month.  Special thanks to Ruth Mell for helping to keep Al in his own home the past two years. 

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to your favorite charity.

I will take you home, down country roads, to the place you were born…West Virginia…rest in peace Al.
