Dale D. Calkins

PORTAGE  --  Dale D. Calkins, age 71, died unexpectedly due to natural causes while hunting on Saturday, November 23, 2013.

Dale was born on January 2, 1942, in Portage, the son of Myron and Avis (Anderson) Calkins.  He served his country in the United States Navy.  Dale married Jane Mael on December 2, 1967 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage.  He worked for Meigs for 34 years.  Dale was an avid outdoorsman.  He loved hunting and fishing.  He enjoyed feeding his wildlife.  He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and his dog, “Biscuit”.  Dale was a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers.   

He is survived by his wife, Jane Calkins, Portage; his children, Julie (Ron) Vires, Westfield, Todd (Lonna) Calkins, Portage, and Cory (Rachel) Calkins, Portage; his grandchildren, Benjamin (Connie) Vires, Montello, Emma and Lauryn Calkins, and Evelyn and Emmett Calkins, all of Portage; his great-granddaughter, Kaelynn Vires; his brothers, Marvin “Turk” Calkins, MO, Darwin “Red” (Joan) Calkins, Pardeeville, and Daniel (Jean) Calkins, Portage/Pardeeville, other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Gary, Leon and Garnett.   

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, on Friday, November 29, 2013 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating.  Military Honors will be presented by Portage area veterans.  Inurnment will be private.  Visitation will be held on Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
