Estella V. “Stella” Carney

PORTAGE  --  Estella V. “Stella” Carney, age 96, a life-long Portage resident, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Tivoli. 

Stella was born on June 23, 1919 in Portage, the daughter of Louis and Eleanor (Rusch) Raimer.  She was married on July 4, 1951 to Jack “Grumpy” Carney, who preceded her in death in 1988.  Stella had worked at Portage Hosiery; starting in 1941 until it closed.  She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Portage, and the “Loafer Girls”.  Stella loved to travel and enjoyed playing cards with the senior card group at city hall.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Marvin Carney, Portage;  her sister-in-law, Nona Merklein, Portage; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack, and her siblings:  her brother, Hilmer Raimer, and her sisters, Bea Raimer Portzen, Evelyn Raimer Praml, Thelma Raimer Lang, and Rocile Raimer Praml.

The family would like to thank Karolyn and the staff of Tivoli for their care and compassion.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the church.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2015 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, with the Rev. Greg Hovland officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be used for special groups at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage.
