George L. Niebuhr, Jr.

PORTAGE  --  George L. Niebuhr, Jr., age 83, of Portage passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Tivoli in Portage.

George was born on October 31, 1931 in Madison, the son of George L. and Anne Lou Ella (Olson) Niebuhr.  He was married on October 7, 1974 to Carol Clarke Sorensen.  George worked for Oscar Mayer and retired in 1980.  He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. 

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carol, of Portage; his daughters, Cheryl Murray and Tammy Downing; his step-son, Knute “Rick” Sorensen (Becky); his brother, Arnold Niebuhr; his sister, Gloria Vetter; his sister-in-law, Patricia Walter (Evan); his brothers-in-law, Richard Clarke (Jeannette), and Robert Clarke (Shirley); his grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Robert Smith (Rhiannon), Brianne Murray, Jennifer Martin (Bill), Dane Sorensen and Brooke Sorensen, four great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Gawain (Clarice), Herbert (Darlene), his sister-in-law, Hildegard, and his step-daughter, Vicki Sorensen Baker.  

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 9, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage.  Memorial services will be private.  Inurment will be held at a later date in Oak Grove Cemetery with Military Honors.
