Paul Dean Syftestad, D.C.

PORTAGE  --  Paul Dean Syftestad, D.C., of Waunakee, formerly of Portage, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI.

Paul was born on September 11, 1927, in Mt. Horeb, WI, the son of Jacob and Eva (Rundhaug) Syftestad. He joined the Navy out of high school at age 17 and served on a minesweeper for one year in the Gulf of Mexico. Paul attended the Palmer School of Chiropractic and graduated in 1949.

He started his first practice in Richland Center in 1949 where he met his wife, Jean Muriel Arntson, who was a new first grade teacher. He was then drafted into the Army for the Korean War, serving at Camp Atterbury Army-Medical Hospital in Edinburgh, Indiana, as an X-ray technician. He then practiced in Portage for over 55 years. He enjoyed playing cards, was active in sports, dancing, and summer family camping throughout the U.S.

He is survived by his wife Jean Syftestad, Waunakee; his children, Karin Syftestad, Boynton Beach, FL, Kristin Barber, Denver, CO, and children, Christopher, Kristina, and Lezer, Eric Syftestad, Madison, WI, Peter (Kristin) Syftestad, Muskego, WI, and their daughters Emma and Claire, Paul (Jill) Syftestad, Chicago, and their daughters Olivia and Kathryn, brother Larry (Ann) Syftestad, Blanchardville, sister Sonja (Gerhard) Luetschwager, Mt. Horeb, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at noon on Thursday, December 17, 2015, at Portage United Methodist Church in Portage with Rev. Tom Countryman officiating.  Military honors will be provided by Portage Area Veteran’s Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 noon on December 17, 2015, at the church. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Portage United Methodist Church.
