Helen G. Wittern

PORTAGE  --  Helen G. Wittern, age 100, of Portage, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the American Way in Portage.

Helen was born on November 2, 1914 in Medford, Minnesota, the daughter of Steve and Martha (Kovaleski) Majusiak. On June 28, 1943 in Fairbault, Minnesota, she married John “Jack” A. Wittern, who preceded her in death on November 25, 1988.  Helen was a graduate of Rogers – Benner (The Minneapolis School of Beauty Culture).  She loved gardening, crafting and reading.  Helen had worked as a credit manager at Montgomery Wards and Atkinson’s.  She was a member of Portage Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Carmen) Vaith and their children, Carol, Kathy, Charlie and Eric, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, of Texas;  her daughter, Judy (Jim) Weiland of Georgia and their children, Jeff (Brooke) Weiland and Janelle (Jairus) Treat, and two grandchildren, Emma Weiland and Jaklyn Treat, all of Florida;  other relatives and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack, a brother and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. David Hankins officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portage Presbyterian Church.
