Lawrence “Abe” Kluge

Portage  --  Lawrence “Abe” Kluge, age 78, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016, at Golden Living Center in Wisconsin Dells.

Lawrence was born on March 6, 1938, in Portage, the son of Clifford and Anita (Kluge) Kleist. He had worked for many years at the Weyenberg Shoe Factory in Portage, and then started his own building and house-moving company. Lawrence loved antique cars, going to auctions, and buying and selling junk. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  

He is survived by his son, Kurt (Alicia Weyer) Kluge of Portage; his daughter, Dawn (Gary Popkin) Welter of Portage; his brothers, Lyle Kluge, Alan Kluge, and Robert (Kathy) Kleist, all of Portage; his grandchildren, Justin Kluge of Portage, Jenne Kluge of Baraboo, Bridget (Josh) LaRoche of Poynette, Mercedes (Joseph) Kitchen of Pardeeville; his great-grandchildren, Nico Kluge, Skylar Nelson, Elexus LaRoche and Jayden LaRoche; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Kay Brandt Kluge.

Memorial services will be at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at 6:00 p.m., with Pastor Cheryl Thomson officiating.  Inurnment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date.  Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family

The family would like to thank the staff at Golden Living Center in Wisconsin Dells and the U.W. Hospital for their excellent care.
