Leone M. Ohnesorge

POYNETTE – Leone Ohnesorge passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016, at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage.

Born October 26, 1926, Leone was the daughter of Walter and Lona (Lipke) Hutler and married Waldo “Pete” Ohnesorge of Poynette on October 26, 1947.  Both were members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Leeds, Wisconsin.

She graduated from Portage High School and the Wisconsin College of Cosmetology. Leone was a long-time member of the Ladies Dorcas Society at Zion Evangelical, the Poynette Curling Club, and the Poynette Historical Society.

Her family loved to tell the story of how Leone met Pete while working at the Super ice cream parlor while both were in high school.  He was a Poynette High School athlete who quickly became enamored of the shy Leone.  They married on her birthday and honeymooned in Door County while Pete coon hunted with male members of his family.  It was the last time Leone went coon hunting, but Door County continued to play an important role in their marriage and family life.

Leone is survived by her beloved daughter Jane (Ohnesorge) Jay and grandson, John W. Jay; her brothers Charles (Ann) Hutler of Benson, Arizona and Kenneth (Sandra) Hutler of Portage; her brothers-in-law, Armin Ohnesorge of Pardeeville, Ronald (Joyce) Ohnesorge of Marshfield, Merle Ohnesorge of Poynette; her sisters-in-law Emeline “Emmy” Thompson of Sun Prairie, Marian Tarrant of Kailua, Hawaii, Laurel Jean Burkett of Morrison, Colorado.  She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom had a special love for their “Aunt Leone.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 68 years, Pete; her brother and sister-in-law Ronald & Arlene Hutler, her sister and brother-in-law Natalie & Vincent Curtis, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy (Herbert) Ottman, sisters-in-law Delores Ohnesorge, Bernice Ohnesorge and Dawn Ohnesorge, and brothers-in-law Wilfred “Billy” Ohnesorge, Dale Tarrant, David Thompson, and Lester Burkett, and her former son-in-law John Jay.

Leone will be remembered for her kindness and her smile and for the fact that she always thought of others first.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016, with a funeral service and luncheon to follow at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Leeds.  Pastors Scott Schwertfeger and Jacob Scott will officiate.  Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Poynette.

The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home of Poynette is assisting the family.
