Gary Guckenberger

PORTAGE – Gary Guckenberger, age 74, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at his home in Pacific Township, Wisconsin.
Gary was born on January 2, 1943, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Harold and Leone (Cook) Guckenberger. He married Marilyn /Mari (Steck) on January 9, 1988, in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He started working at age 16 at A&P and continued retail management throughout his life. After 13 years with Kwik Trip in LaCrosse, he retired at age 62. Gary was very active, creative, and an accomplished remodeler. He used his skills to remodel his homes and of many family members. He was a member of the National Guard for 8 years, a board member at Saddle Ridge, and a member of the Pine Trail Golf Club. Gary was a huge NASCAR fan, a history buff, enjoyed traveling, golfing, and hiking in distant places such as Costa Rica. Just two years ago, he hiked Route 66 at the Grand Canyon. 
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn/Mari (Steck) Guckenberger, his children, Dr. Lisa (Jeff) Wolf of Racine, WI, Stacy Guckenberger of Kenosha, WI, from a previous marriage; step-children, Marcy (Rob) Phelps of Aurora, CO, Andrew (Julie) David of Minneapolis, MN; 4 grandchildren, Megan, Nolan, Alicia (Josh) and their child, Londyn, Kyle (Maddie) and their child, Kacen; brother, Greg (Chris) Guckenberger of Batavia, IL; sisters and brothers-in-law, many other relatives and friends throughout the country. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Leone, and his brother, Bruce.  
Memorial services will be held at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home (www.pmmfh.com) in Portage, Wisconsin, on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at 5:00 p.m., with Rev. Gloria Stubitsch officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Portage Area Veterans Honor Guard following the service. Inurnment will be private. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on June 1, 2017, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace Hospice, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.
