Jeffrey S. Hoel

PORTAGE - Jeffrey S. Hoel, age 47, passed away peacefully at the Dodge Correctional Infirmary Hospice Unit on Sunday, October 1, 2017, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jeffrey was born on November 20, 1969 in Portage. He loved nature and working with his hands and made many craft items for family, friends, and fellow inmates, which he gave away as gifts. Even though Jeffrey was incarcerated and undergoing chemo since last March, he always remained positive and set an example to other inmates through his strong work ethic until he was bedridden.

Jeffrey celebrated his native-American heritage by participating in the monthly “Sweat Lodge”, a ceremony that promotes wholeness and healing.

He is survived by his mother, Delores Hoel of Portage; brother, Daniel (Alyssa) Hoel Brewer of Madison; his niece, Perla Brewer of Madison; uncles and aunts, Roger (Shirley) Hoel, Harland Hoel, Richard (Edna) Hoel, Robert Hoel; cousins, other relatives, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald G. Cardin, and his grandparents, George and Iva Hoel.

A memorial service will be held at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Portage, Wisconsin, on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Dave Mowers officiating. Inurnment will follow at St. John’s Columbarium in the garden. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family and sent to Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home, 430 W. Wisconsin St., Portage, WI 53901.
