Herbert G. Henke

PORTAGE  --  Herbert G. Henke, age 92, of Portage, died on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at the Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. William Grimm officiating.  Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Poynette.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Herbert Henke was born on May 13, 1916 in Packwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Herman and Anna (Markowski) Henke.  He had worked as a commercial truck driver, hauling milk for many years.  Herbert also worked at Marachowsky’s, Eulberg’s Brewery, and Milwaukee Road Transport.  He also did custom combining and farming.  His hobbies included antique auto car shows, gardening, playing cards and traveling.  He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lewiston Township.

He is survived by his wife, Alice;  his daughter, Diane (Dave) Thomson, Montello;  his son, Mark (Susie) Henke, Portage;  two grandchildren, Kevin Thomson and Brian Thomson;  one great-grandson, Kendall Thomson;  other near relatives and many close friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Helen Henke, his sister, Bernadine Steinhaus, and two brothers, Robert Henke and Edwin Henke.
