Richard “Chic” D. Markofski

PORTAGE  --  Richard “Chic” D. Markofski, age 80, of Briggsville, passed away on Sunday morning, March 1, 2009 at Hospice Care in Fitchburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, with the Rev. Dick Inglett officiating.  Military graveside services will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage, and also on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.

Richard was born on May 22, 1928 in Berlin, Wisconsin, the son of Stephen and Florence (Funk) Markofski.  He served his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He had owned and operated Chic’s Sportsman’s Bar in Portage for 10 years.  Chic worked at the Portage Post Office as a clerk for many years, until retirement.  Chic enjoyed “Wednesday Night Wings” with his family, hunting and fishing.  He had been a member of the VFW.  Chic and his family vacationed every summer at White Lake Beach.

He is survived by his children, Dick “Chic” (Chris) Markofski, Portage, Peggy (Brian) Martin, Portage, Lana (Bill) Mueller, Portage, and Lori (Jim) Banks, Endeavor;  grandchildren, Phillip (Karie) Martin, Portage, Christopher Banks, Stevens Point, Michelle Markofski, Portage, and Stacy Banks, Madison;  one great-grandson, Hunter Martin, Portage;  his sisters-in-law, Kathy Markofski, Portage and Patti Ashley, Portage;  nieces, nephews, other near relatives and many close friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty, and a son, Bill, and a brother, Donald “Moe” Markofski.
