 Forrest M. "Mose" Moseley

PORTAGE  --  Forrest M. “Mose” Moseley, age 100, passed away on Thursday afternoon, May 20, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.

Forrest was born on October 13, 1909 in Cando, North Dakota, the son of Wayne Thornton Moseley and Josephine Wells Moseley, where his father was a lawyer and church music director, and his mother was a school teacher.  He attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and then began working for Jim Graham and Standard Oil Company.  He went to fight in the European Theater from 1943 until 1945, at the end of World War II.  When Forrest returned to Portage, joining Phil Parsons, the station became Parsons and Moseley, and later, Moseley and Polnow.  Forrest put in 39 years in the Standard Oil business, and retired in 1969.  He was married on May 14, 1936 to Evelyn Virginia Bryan.  She preceded him in death on December 16, 2005.  He was a member of the Portage Presbyterian Church, spending 73 years as a member of the church choir.  Forrest was also a member of the Portage Country Club and the Portage Curling Club.  After retirement, Evelyn and Forrest loved to travel together.  They visited Europe, Canada, and many places in the United States, including two trips to Alaska.

As a young man, Forrest found time for tennis, and was the city champion for seven years.  He was a football enthusiast;  a Packer and Brewers fan all the way.  In his late 70’s, he started to curl, and always looked forward to the next season, especially the annual senior national bonspiel.  In his last several years on the ice, he was celebrated as the oldest active curler in the United States.  He also was an avid bowler and golfer, recording a hole-in-one at the Portage Country Club, on Old #7 on August 27, 1987.

He is survived by his son, Donald W. (Barbara) Moseley, Madison;  a granddaughter, Carron (Eric) Schulz, Mt. Horeb;  a great-granddaughter, Skyelar Schulz, Mt. Horeb;  nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.  Forrest was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn, his sister, Marion Gathercoal, and his sister-in-law, Anne Bryan.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the Portage Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Hankins officiating.  Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Tuesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at noon.  The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
