John “Jack” W. Allen

PORTAGE/WYOCENA –  John “Jack” W. Allen, age 92, died on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena.

Jack was born on May 3, 1919 in Caledonia Township, the son of Alex and Della (Walker) Allen.  He married Lois L. Radant on August 28, 1941 at the Caledonia Presbyterian Church.  Jack farmed in Caledonia for a few years and worked at SCS and the Poynette Game Farm prior to being hired as a Special Conservation Warden with the Department of Natural Resources in 1958.  Later he was a Park Policeman at Devil’s Lake where he was one of the first Park Police to carry Conservation Warden credentials.  In his retirement years, Jack raised many different types of vegetables for his roadside vegetable stand at his farm in Portage where he was known for his famous sweet corn.  Jack was an outdoor enthusiast and an avid collector of fishing, trapping, and hunting memorabilia.  He loved sharing his collections and telling stories related to them.   

Jack is survived by his wife, Lois Allen, Portage;  his children, Ginny (Robert) Johnson, Baraboo, John (Vicki) Allen, Oakhurst, CA, Robert (Agnes) Allen, Merrimac, Mary Brown, Portage, and Katy Wheeler, Wisconsin Dells;  grandchildren, Michelle (Dr. Jim) Jones, Endeavor, Michael (Vickie) Busch, Hudson, CO;  great-grandson, Mitchell Busch, Appleton;  grandchildren, Jason Allen, California; Jennifer Allen,     California; Brenda Allen Laufenberg (Tom), Windsor; Jeri Allen Oppermann (Clint), Spencer, WI; Marcia Allen, Seattle, WA; and Brian (Stacie) Wheeler, Pardeeville;  14 great-grandchildren;  his brother, Stanley (Doris) Allen, Madison;  his sisters, Betty (Joseph)  Meier, and Ruth Ann (William) Cunningham, both of New Jersey;  other relatives and many friends.    Jack was preceded in death by his grandson SSgt. Daniel D. Busch, his parents, his sisters Lillian Clifford, Maude Leslie, Dorothy Milton, Marie Wintrone    and Evelyn Winkler, his brother Wallace Allen, and an infant sister Barbara.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Portage United Methodist Church in Portage.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church prior to services. Inurnment will be private in Welsh Cemetery.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the Columbia Health Care staff on Willow Court, for all their special care and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
