Gary A. Halverson

PORTAGE – Gary A. Halverson, age 74, of Portage, WI, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the William S. Middleton Memorial V.A. Hospital in Madison, after a long battle with COPD.

Gary was born on November 25, 1949, in Stoughton, WI, the son of Halver and Myrnell (Thompson) Halverson. He married Lori Alexander on June 4, 1993. He served in the U.S. Army, including 13 months in Vietnam. Gary worked for 39 years for Milwaukee Road, Soo Line, and Canadian Pacific Railroad as a conductor. He also served as a conductor on AMTRAK during this time. He served as treasurer of the United Transportation Union. Gary was a member of the Stoughton VFW Post #328. Gary was a fisherman and hunter, was a member of the American Bowling Congress having attained a perfect score of 300 and loved to play cards with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Lori; sons, Joshua Culp and Gary (Georgianna) Halverson, Jr.; siblings, Tom (Ann) Halverson, Sue (Jim) Chandler, and Jack Halverson; grandchildren, Arianna Fjelstad, Anya Halverson, Cody Culp and Tyler Culp, Scarlett and Jaxson Hoeppner; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Leah Sue, in infancy; step daughter, Sarah Holmes; and granddaughter, Lincoln Hoeppner.  

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the VFW Post #1707, 215 W. Collins St., Portage, Wisconsin. The family would like to thank the Portage Area Veterans for providing Military Honors beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Inurnment will be private.
