Janez Leonardo “Jack” Kos PORTAGE -- Janez Leonardo “Jack” Kos, age 86, of Portage, died on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Hospice Care in Fitchburg. Janez was born on October 20, 1922 in Slovenia, the son of Janez and Ana Kos. He was thirty-three years old when he came to the United States in 1956. Janez survived WWII even as he suffered many terrifying experiences in his homeland of Slovenia. During the war, Janez nursed many soldiers and civilians back to health, saving several from imminent death while risking his own life. He worked as a nurse at Divine Savior Healthcare Hospital for thirty-four years. During that time, he also traveled throughout this area with the county nurse tending to the many needs of home-bound and nursing home patients. Janez is survived by many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joseph, Peter and Andrej; and a sister, Francis. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Jim Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Portage. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, Jack requested Masses be said in his memory.
