Gary John Larkin
PORTAGE -- On March 3, 2025, at the esteemed age of 88, Gary John Larkin, passed away with his loving wife, Judy, by his side.
Gary was born on May 18, 1936, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Frances (Mike) and Ruth Larkin. He graduated from La Crosse Aquinas High School in 1954 and later earned a chemistry degree from UW-La Crosse. He was a lifelong Packer and Badger fan and a passionate advocate for his community. His kindness, generosity, and sense of humor touched the hearts of all who knew him.
He was a devoted husband of 61 years to his wife, Judy, and loving father to Tim Larkin (Suzy) of Portage, WI and Lisbeth Larkin (Doug Bellin) of Mercer Island, WA. His grandchildren – Emma, Gabby, Coleman and Oliver will dearly miss their grandpa’s generosity, ability to connect with everyone, and stories from his youth.
Gary was preceded in death by his siblings, Frances (Mike) Larkin and William (Bill) Larkin. No doubt they’ve already been greeted with a joke and an inside story about some childhood shenanigans.
Gary’s favorite pastimes were traveling with his family, cheering on the Packers and Badgers, and spending quality time with his grandkids. He was a hardworking man who supported his family in every way imaginable, working until his early 80’s. His career began at American Motors in Racine, moving on to Badger Ordnance in Portage, then to Portage Industries, and eventually as part owner of Portage Plastics until his retirement. Gary was respected for his expertise, integrity, and dedication, contributing significantly to the company’s success and earning numerous awards throughout his career.
For those who wish to celebrate Gary’s life and share stories, an informal service will be held on Friday, March 21, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Pflanz Mendrala Funeral Home, in Portage. A Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with inurnment at St. Mary Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Gary’s honor to the Portage Optimist or the Columbia County Humane Society.
